About the book and project MFDA-ARP

The book Another Look at the Works of Álvaro Siza Vieira is the result of the post-doctoral work of Pedro Leão Neto, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), under the guidance of Jorge Figueira, Associate Professor of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra and José Maçãs de Carvalho, Assistant Professor of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology and the College of Arts of the University of Coimbra. The book is organized in 7 main chapters or sections.

With this book we intend to start the first publication of the MFDA-ARP research project, which started in 2015, at the Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU), an R&D unit integrated in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto, under the scientific coordination of the research group CCRE1. MFDA-ARP is located in the area of Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) and aims, among others, to help the internationalization, dissemination and visibility of spaces, forms, memories and cultures of Portuguese Architecture, with Portugal as the preferred study territory. However, the possibility of including in the study works located outside the country when considered significant – namely in territories belonging to the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, or in former Portuguese territories such as Macau and Goa – and anywhere in the world is not ruled out.

This study focuses on architecture situated in a period of time between the beginning of the 20th century – when the first works denoting the influence of modernism or modernism appeared – until the present. We are interested in buildings and programs of Portuguese Architecture considered relevant in the universe of the practice and discipline of architecture, not only of the Modern, but also of the Postmodern3 that naturally includes Contemporary Architecture and its new trends. We are interested in a post-modernity that is critical and not amnesic, that is, a post-modernity that can be connected to the modern in different ways and to a greater or lesser degree.

VISUAL SPACES OF CHANGE NO CI.CLO BIENAL FOTOGRAFIA DO PORTO 2019

Ci.CLO Bienal Fotografia do Porto 2019 is a platform for creation, debate and reflection; a Ci.CLO that celebrates artistic practice and is renewed every two years and its program in 2019 counted with the collaboration of Visual Spaces of Change that implemented in several public spaces and collective use projects of Contemporary Photography, seeking to generate a dynamic of interaction with exhibitions in cultural organizations, professional associations, universities and other alternative spaces of artistic production. During the official period of Ci.CLO 2019, the highlights are the exhibitions in the subway stations of S. Bento and the Allies, the exhibition at the Order of Architects and the Almeida Garrett Municipal Library. The material to be brought to the public through the contemporary photographic projects exhibited in these spaces constitute ‘visual narratives’ that intentionally interfere with the territory, causing real and virtual encounters between contrasting landscapes of the AMP, offering angles and perspectives on the territory in order to give a new look to its cultural, environmental and architectural heritage.
