The Fernando Távora Auditorium of the FAUP hosted last March 29th the conference underlying the themes “INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CONTEST (DPIc) – PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK “A TALK ON ARCHITECTURE IN PHOTOGRAPHY: PHOTOGRAPHS BY PAOLO ROSSELLI” / CONVERSE IN BACK OF THE THEME “ARCHITECTURE AND FICTION IN PHOTOGRAPHY”.

The session was opened at around 6:30pm and was hosted by Pedro Leão Neto and Camilo Rebelo (the organizers of the conferences scopio Debates: Duel / Dueto (AAI)). The presentation of the International Design and Photography Contest (DPIc) – Space and Identity in Faculties of U. Porto: Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) was ensured by Fátima Vieira (Vice-Rector for Culture, Museums and Editions of U.P. ) and José Miguel Rodrigues (Director of CEAU) made the presentation of the book Pedro Gadanho – Paolo Rosselli – A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli, giving the word to the authors – Pedro Gadanho and Paolo Rosselli – who started a conversation around the theme “Architecture and Fiction in Photography”, a discussion in which the audience can also participate.

A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli

The book Pedro Gadanho – Paolo Rosselli – A Talk on Architecture in Photography: Photographs by Paolo Rosselli is the first of four publications focused on each of the Dueto/Duelo sessions, which encouraged a critical debate between architects and photographers related to Architecture, Art and Image, which took place at the Casa das Artes do Porto in 2016. The curators of this event – the series of Conferences Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) Duel/Duet – were Camilo Rebelo and Pedro Leão Neto. Based on the conversation between Pedro Gadanho and Paolo Rosselli and the enriching exchange of ideas between these two authors, the book comprises a visual narrative in which the sum is greater than its parts, allowing an innovative reading and a broader understanding of the thoughts, work and artistic strategies in Rosselli’s photography.

International Design and Photography Contest (DPIc) – Space and Identity at U. Porto Colleges

The core theme of this contest is the idea of Utopia and Visual Spaces of Change (VSC), focusing on the spaces and identity of the 14 Faculties of U. Porto. The contest is organized by the research group CCRE (FAUP) integrated in the R&D center of FAUP (CEAU) and AEFAUP, in partnership with the Student Associations of all other Faculties of the U. Porto, being promoters the consortium of the VSC research project, together with the laboratory AAi2 Lab, counting on the institutional support of the Rectory of U. Porto and FAUP.

The International Design and Photography Contest (DPIc) – Space and Identity in Faculties of U. Porto: Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) is addressed to all students and researchers at U. Porto. The coordination of the contest is the responsibility of the CCRE-CEAU/FAUP, the main responsible for the VSC project, in partnership with the ALGORITMI-Lab2PT/UMINHO Center for the VSC project.

Visual Spaces of Change (VSC)

Visual Spaces of Change (VSC) is the first stage of an Architecture, Art, Image and Innovation (AAI2) project with a significant component of Contemporary Photography, combined with complementary research in Spatial Syntax and Information Technologies. Based on previous research by the Center for Spatial Communication and Representation (CCRE/CEAU), this project will investigate the conditions for the creation of a network of public and collective spaces capable of catalyzing emerging dynamics of change in the Metropolitan Area of Porto (AMP). The territory under study is used simultaneously as a laboratory for empirical experimentation and a stage for visual representation of the agents and processes of urban change that are intended to be analyzed. This project will produce visual synthesis of these dynamics to give visibility to specific aspects of their interconnected nature and historical uniqueness that are difficult to perceive without the propositive use of image and photography. This project opens new avenues of investigation by proposing an original combination of visual research methods and spatial analysis from the identification of a set of strategic spaces and pathways in the city, connected by connection points identified in the urban network. These points are calculated through syntactic metrics that allow optimizing the interaction between public and collective spaces. Contemporary Photography Projects (CPP) will be developed and implemented in specific locations, conceived as “visual narratives” that intentionally interfere with the metropolitan territory in an exercise of self-reflective representation of its own process of urban change.
